The European Islamic Centre (EIC) brought together people from different backgrounds, faiths and communities to share a meal and embrace the spirit of Ramadan.

A special community Iftar at The European Islamic Centre (EIC) welcomed residents, faith leaders and members of the local community, showing how food, faith and friendship can help create meaningful connections.

Among those attending were the Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Zahid Chauhan, and Leader of Oldham Council, Cllr Arooj Shah, who joined guests in breaking their fast, talking about the importance of building stronger communities and reflecting on the true meaning of Ramadan.

Ramadan is more than just fasting; it is a time for reflection, gratitude and helping others. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, not only as an act of faith but to understand the struggles of those who go hungry every day. It is also a time for community and supporting those in need, making Community Iftar gatherings like this so important.

Oldham Council Leader, Cllr Arooj Shah, said: “Community Iftars are important because they bring people together. Ramadan is about unity, reflection and supporting one another. Sharing a meal with people from different backgrounds helps to build friendships, foster a better understanding and most importantly, build a stronger community."

"The gathering at the European Islamic Centre showed how special these moments are, as people sat side by side, connecting and embracing the spirit of Ramadan. Events like this remind us why coming together matters, not just during Ramadan, but all year round.”

The Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Zahid Chauhan, said: “It was a pleasure to come together with the Leader and people from different communities for the Community Iftar at the European Islamic Centre.  This event is a true reminder of how it brings people from all backgrounds closer.

"Celebrating the spirit of Ramadan together was a wonderful experience. A huge thank you to the European Islamic Centre for their hospitality.”

The Mayor has donated his entire Mayoral allowance to the EIC community food bank to support families struggling with food insecurity. His pledge, in order to help provide meals and essential supplies to those in need, was made upon his re-election for a second term of office as the Mayor of Oldham in 2024.

The European Islamic Centre remains a welcoming place where residents can come together to learn, connect and support those in need. Events like the Community Iftar provide an opportunity for people to share experiences, meet new friends and strengthen community ties.
