15-year-old Brooke Travis Newcombe shared his incredible story with Mayor Dr Zahid Chauhan OBE, Deputy Mayor Eddie Moores and Acting Chief Executive Shelley Kipling.

As a child, Brooke survived life-threatening illnesses, including sepsis and meningitis, which resulted in four limb amputations, organ failure, and partial blindness. Despite these challenges, Brooke has turned his experiences into a mission to raise awareness about sepsis, meningitis, and organ donation, hoping to save lives through better understanding.

Since becoming Mayor, Dr Zahid Chauhan replaced the traditional Prayers section at council meetings with a “Moment of Reflection.” This gives members the chance to hear real stories from local residents and reflect on how their decisions in the Chamber directly affect people in the community. Brooke’s story is a powerful example of this initiative in action, giving a voice to those who inspire change.

Mayor Dr Zahid Chauhan said: “Brooke’s story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through strength and positivity. His campaign to raise awareness about sepsis and other critical health issues is inspiring us all. By listening to real people like Brooke, we can create real change in our community.”

Brooke’s visit and his powerful speech to the full council have left a lasting impact. His story is a call to action, showing how real-life experiences can inspire change and improve lives. By sharing voices like Brooke’s, the council is making sure local people are at the heart of their decisions.
