Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, Active Travel Commissioner Dame Sarah Storey, and Oldham Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah joined volunteers and community members at Failsworth Bike Library.

The event celebrated the hard work of local volunteers and highlighted the importance of community-led projects in encouraging cycling.

The volunteers, primarily from Moston Cycle Club, run the Failsworth Bike Library in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). The event gave local leaders the chance to engage with community members, answer questions and discuss how cycling helps connect communities and improve wellbeing across Oldham and Greater Manchester.

Cllr Arooj Shah said: "We're committed to supporting safe, sustainable travel and making cycling easier for everyone in Oldham. The Bike Library programme is a fantastic way for people to give cycling a try, helping them get around more easily and bringing our community closer together. By teaming up with local groups, we’re making sure cycling is accessible to everyone in Oldham."

Failsworth Bike Library, along with other bike libraries across the borough, serves as a valuable community resource where residents can borrow a bike just like a book. This initiative encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to try cycling. Run by dedicated volunteers, these libraries play a central role in Oldham’s grassroots cycling movement, making cycling accessible, affordable, and enjoyable for everyone. Contact your local bike library to find out more about what they offer!
