The world-renowned Tour of Britain cycling event returns to Oldham in September after a four-year break, with the support of Oldham Council.
The eight-day event takes place on September 3 and is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious cycling races. Elite riders from across the globe will be hitting the Oldham route with Olympic, world and Tour de France champions taking part.
This will be the first time since 2019 that the city region has been part of the route, with Greater Manchester hosting stage one, or the “Grand Départ” of the UK’s biggest professional cycle race. The event attracts a roadside audience of over 1.5 million spectators across the country.
Oldham will undoubtedly be one of the highlights on the Altrincham-to-Manchester route, with its steep hills, winding roads and frequently high winds. Many of the cyclists taking part – even those who complete globally – will relish the challenging experience.
Residents and businesses are being encouraged to show support of the event and cheer on the cyclists as they veer through the borough.
The inclusion of Oldham in the Tour of Britain highlights the council’s commitment to promoting health, fitness, and sport among residents. The event is expected to inspire residents of all ages to take part in cycling, lead an active lifestyle and take advantage of the borough’s adventurous terrains.
Cllr Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said: "We are thrilled to be part of this monumental event and to welcome the Tour of Britain back to Oldham.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the beauty of our town to a global audience, and we look forward to the energy and excitement that the race will undoubtedly bring to residents, visitors, businesses and all those taking part."
Greater Manchester will host a weekend of cycling events, activities and community engagement, and any Tour of Britain activities and promotions taking place in Oldham will be published on the I Love Oldham Facebook Page.
The Tour has contributed £27.6m each year to the UK economy, according to research by Frontline. Oldham Council will be working with business to maximise their opportunities and stimulate the local economy.
While spectators are being encouraged to join in the action by watching for free from the roadside, ITV4 will continue to broadcast live flag-to-flag coverage of each stage, and nightly highlights show, allowing fans in the UK to watch wherever they are. The race will also be shown in over 150 countries worldwide.
