Emphasise the repeated phrases. Can your child remember and finish some of them off by themselves? For example, “We’re going on a…” and “We’re going to catch a …”.
There may be words in the story your child may not know, talk about what these words mean together.

Can your child nd the writing and talk about the pictures?
Use a mirror to get your child to see what their face looks like when they make the sounds in the story, for example, “Splash, splosh!”, “Squelch, squerch!” or “Hoo woo!”. Can they make the different shapes with their mouth?
Age 4–5

Practise good listening skills with your child. Can they sit nicely and listen carefully to what you’re asking them? Cue them in when you ask a question about the story, for example “Listen carefully now because I’m going to ask you to count how many people are going on a bear hunt?”.
If there are words your child hasn’t heard before find examples when you’re out and about so that they understand what the words mean.
