2. Independence training

There is support available for students who face difficulty with transport.

At school

For pupils in special schools transport provision is considered at each annual review, especially from Year 9 onwards.

Students are encouraged to move to independent travel where possible.

Within Oldham special schools, mobility and independence training is provided in Key Stage 4 (14 - 16 years) and for students aged 16-19.

Life Skills courses and individual assessments are available at Oldham's special schools.

Training takes place during the school day, and on the home to school journey.

Mobility training programmes are available to pupils with special educational needs in the mainstream sector in the 12/13 academic year.

Students who have left school

If necessary, the Council's Social Care Team can provide ongoing independence and mobility training for students who have left school.

Training includes bussing programmes and rehabilitation for mobility needs.
