Animal establishments and agricultural premises

The council has a rolling program of visits and inspections for all agricultural premises.

The intervals at which these visits are carried out are determined by the risk the business presents to its customers, taking into account factors such as the species of animals kept, numbers of animals kept and the standards of animal welfare and traceability observed.

Licensed animal establishments are inspected on a schedule based on risk,  how long a licence is issued for and having been given a star rating.

Non-compliance

There is a range of actions the council can take following the discovery of a breach of legislation, or non-compliance with a licence condition.

Actions can include verbal advice, advisory letters and leaflets, legal notices, Home Office cautions and prosecution.

The action taken depends on the seriousness of the offence, the businesses’ past history and the council's confidence in the management.

Whatever course of action, it must be in line with the Council's Enforcement Policy.
