10. EYPP toolkit for Early Years Settings

This guide will take you through steps to ensure that you use your funding appropriately to improve the quality of experiences you provide for your children. The resources within this guide have been included to help maximise the impact on children’s learning and development.

Step 1: What do you want to achieve?

Decide on your priorities by:

  • Using internal data and your professional judgement, what are your starting points?
  • What are your ambitions for improvement?
  • In which particular areas do your children need more support?
  • How will you know if the intervention is having a positive impact on learning?

Step 2: How can you get there?

a. Identify the children eligible for EYPP

The early year’s census collections will be amended so that providers must identify which children attract EYPP.

b. Identify any gaps in learning and development :

Use your tracking and monitoring systems to ensure you have a clear picture of the needs of your children. This will provide clear documented evidence to show any gaps between those eligible for EYPP and other children. It is also good practice to look at Oldham and national data to get the wider context.

c. Identify barriers to children’s learning.

It would be useful at this point to undertake an audit of practice and provision. Using the Journey to Excellence or preferred audit tool, identify areas of practice that require developing further. The Journey to Excellence audit has the following sections to support you:

  • Strengthening Leadership for Learning
  • Supporting progress, learning and attainment
  • Developing practitioner knowledge, skills and practice
  • Providing high quality environments (indoors and out) to facilitate learning and development
  • Facilitating partnerships to support children’s learning and development
  • Supporting the learning and development of children with English as an Additional Language

d. Use the knowledge gained from a, b and c to plan the way forward.

It is important to know your starting point, what the desired outcome will be and how you will evidence the impact of the intervention. The Journey to Excellence has a pro-forma to support you to evidence your plans, showing the steps to achieve maximum impact for your identified cohort.

You will now know;

  • The children in your early years setting who are eligible for EYPP
  • The learning and development needs of these children and
  • The learning and development/support needs of members of your team.
  • The areas of learning and development identified for interventions

Step 3 – Select an appropriate intervention

Here is a table showing examples of interventions and resources which you may want to consider with an indication of possible cost. The DfE intend to publish a toolkit in the near future which will support you when considering how to get the best use of funding. There are many more activities you may be interested in adding to the table below. The cost will depend on what you have identified in the steps column.

Collating the evidence to show how funding has been used to improve outcomes for EYPP children, will; support your discussion at Ofsted inspection, enable you to report back to parents, staff and other professionals on the effectiveness of your intervention.

Updating the Ofsted online SEF to include your identified areas for development, impact measures or next steps will support you at inspection.
