The Council’s Road Safety Support provides education, training, and publicity for all ages and types of road users, with a particular focus on our more vulnerable road users.
Education visits
- Nursery/Pre-school: We offer resources for children and their parents/carers to promote early road safety awareness.
- Primary Schools: Interactive lessons are delivered to Reception, Year 1, Year 3, and Year 5 classes. Lesson plans and resources are also provided to teachers for use with other year groups.
- Secondary Schools: We engage with Year 7 students, offering a variety of resources for additional lessons or teacher use. We provide advice on safe travel to and from school, particularly as pupils transition from primary to secondary school.
- Sixth Forms and Colleges: We provide a pre-driver, driver, and passenger safety presentation titled ‘Safe Drive Stay Alive,’ available to all sixth forms and colleges throughout Oldham and Greater Manchester.
- Children's Centres: We aim to contact all centres twice a year to engage with both parents and children, providing essential road safety education.
- Youth Groups: We offer resources and advice for youth group leaders to incorporate road safety into their activities.
- Senior Citizens: Free driver refresher courses are available for those over 55 who wish to update their skills or gain confidence on the road and motorways.
Training
- Cycle Training: We manage the Bikeability scheme, operated by BikeRight!, which is available to pupils at all schools across the borough.
- Balance Training: We provide training for Key Stage 1 pupils to equip them with essential skills in cycle handling and awareness, building their confidence ahead of future training.
Publicity
We support national and local campaigns to promote safe driving practices, with a focus on key issues such as speeding, drink-driving, and mobile phone use.
