Which bin What goes in it?
Blue bin and bag

Blue bin

  • Paper and card
  • Food and drinks cartons (tetra packs)
  • Egg boxes
  • Cardboard
  • Card packaging
  • Newspapers, magazines, brochures, envelopes and junk mail
 

Please wrap any shredded paper up inside a sheet of newspaper, or place in a cardboard box. This is to keep it contained within the blue bin and also helps during collection.

 

If you have extra recycling, you should either take it to your local tip, or ask your neighbours if they have any extra space in their bins.

 

Should you find that you often have extra recycling, you can order bigger recycling bins.

Brown bin

  • Plastic pots (e.g. yoghurt, soup, cosmetics etc) 
  • Plastic tubs (e.g. margarine, laundry powder, chocolates etc) 
  • Plastic trays including black plastic trays (e.g. raw and cooked meat, fruit and veg punnets etc) 
  • Plastic bottles (e.g. milk, pop, bleach, cleaning products, trigger sprays, shampoo) 
  • Glass bottles and jars  
  • Food tins and drink cans 
  • Aerosols 
  • Foil 
  • No plastic film, carrier bags, crisp packets, or pet food pouches 

All items must be clean and empty of any food or drink

Green bin

  • Food and garden waste (no soil, gravel, stones or wood)
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Grass, flowers, hedge and plant cuttings
  • Out of date food (no packaging)
  • Meat and bones (cooked and uncooked)
  • Breads and pastries
  • Dairy (e.g. cheese) and egg shells
  • All cooked and uncooked food

You may wish to use a compostable bag to line your indoor food caddy. These are available from over 100 stockists, including major supermarkets and public libraries across the borough.

  • Nappies
    Polystyrene
    Plastic bags and film
    Other household plastics such as plant pots
    Lids from glass jars and bottles
    Wrapped broken crockery and glassware
