Sending and receiving emails securely makes sure that information within the email isn’t accessed by someone who shouldn’t have access to it.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) provides cyber security guidance and support, helping to make the UK the safest place to live and work online. Oldham Council follows guidance from the NCSC to allow sending and receiving emails securely.

Sending us information securely

If you’re sending us an email that contains information you want to protect, our systems allow you to send the email using encryption. Encryption converts the information into a secret code which can only be read by the person you’re sending it to.

If you’re sending something on behalf of an organisation, please refer to your IT department to understand whether your organisation has the same arrangements in place. Secure email can then be sent to any email account with a @oldham.gov.uk email address.

Extra security with Egress

If secure email is not available, Oldham Council also has the option to send information securely using Egress. Egress allows the protection of your email and lets you email Oldham Council in a safe enclosed environment.

Egress is free to use when sending or replying to emails from us. Further information about Egress can be found on their website.
