Description

The Hearing Resource Centre at Hathershaw College is a resourced base provision for secondary age deaf students with a range of hearing losses who require support to access the curriculum.  The Centre is staffed by two Teachers of the Deaf and ten Educational Communicators.

The Hearing Resource Centre offers the following:-

  • Hearing Resource Centre – Acoustically treated classroom
  • Different communication methods (used as appropriate for each student)
  • Personalised curriculum for each student
  • Full time support from HI specialist staff in mainstream
  • HRC lessons – one to one lessons for pre and post tutoring of new topics / concepts and for support with homework
  • Differentiation of curriculum as appropriate. Students may be withdrawn from some lessons or follow modified schemes of work in the HRC for some subjects
  • Language assessments to monitor the progress of students
  • Speech and Language sessions
  • All teaching staff in school familiar have had deaf awareness training
  • Specialists in teaching HI students with additional learning, physical and behaviour needs
  • Close liaison with Audiology Team at The Integrated Care Centre
  • Sign language used at assemblies and events
  • Personalised, intensive transition programme for pupils in Year 6 (visits to Primary school during Year 6, transition events at Hathershaw, trips and activities to familiarise children with the school, deaf peer group and HRC staff
  • Support when choosing options subjects
  • Liaison with school careers advisor to discuss possible routes into further education
  • Organised visits to different colleges throughout Key Stage 4
  • Regular contact between HRC staff and parents
  • Bilingual home/school liaison officer
