How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

I will discuss with parents at our first initial meeting about the child's development so far. I will then keep track of the child's development in the Learning Journey, informing parents and the Professionals who need to know of any problems to assist the child in their development. I will keep up to date with SEND training.

How do you involve parents/carers?

Having a good relationship with parents is very important and together we should know the child and quickly identify any problems. Regular discussions when children are dropped off/ picked up, all about me forms and the child's Learning Journeys and reports asking for feed back should identify any concerns we have together about a child's development. After discussing together we should devise a plan of action to help the child's progress and if other professionals are to be involved.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

When we have identified that your child needs extra support. I will plan activities to help, keeping you informed of progress made, also advising you of things you could do at home to continue what I am doing.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

I will follow the EYFS and record developments in your child's Learning Journey also taking into account recommendations made by other professionals involved with your child and working this into my planning. Working together we should provide the support your child needs.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

We will follow the EYFS and record the development in the Learning Journey where we will have agreed on a set of goals we expect to achieve in a realistic time scale. As I hope we have a good working relationship together, we will know that your child is achieving outcomes as we both know your child.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

Knowing your child I would plan activities to help your child feel included and use equipment appropriate to your child needs. I also know your child's development would benefit by learning from other children's play.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

My setting has a driveway with flat surface to my front door with a lowered threshold easy access for wheelchairs, also flat surface around side of property to garden at the rear. We have a step out of the conservatory to garden but seeing any access problems we would place ramps to gain the access for wheelchairs or go around through front door. All toys and resources are downstairs and easy accessible for children, although toilet facilities are upstairs.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

All children would be included in any trips outside the setting, taking into account each child's needs. Risk assessments would be done prior to the event and any special adaptions would be catered for so all parties have an enjoyable time.

How do you work with other organisations?

I would be willing to work with any external agency to support any child. At the moment children's needs in my care have only required Health Visitors, Children's Centre's and Schools.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

All children starting in my setting are treated as part of my family and as such their happiness means everything to me. We have settling in days where a child attends with parent then by themselves for short time and this is increased before the child's start date, during which we have gained lots of information about the child such as likes, what comforts them, daily routine so we can keep the transition as near to their family life as possible. Children leaving the setting are still like family and we still send cards on those special occasions and I even have invites to their 21st, such special times still shared.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

As a Childminder I have no staff, but I myself attend SEND training and updates.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

I hope to have a good working relationship with all my parents and as such I would hope parents could approach me with any concerns they have, so we could work together to resolve it. Failing this I will have given parents a copy of Concern or Complaints Policy when they started, it will advise them if they cant approach me then to put it in writing and either send it to me or to OFSTED who will investigate further.
