YesHow do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?
• Through identifying children’s starting points during their first few weeks of their start date at nursery. • Discussing with parents/carers their individual needs and behaviour. • Observing, recording and tracking their development according to the Early Years Foundation Stage, identifying any areas of concern where children are not developing to expected age/stage outcomes.How do you involve parents/carers?
• Parents are asked to identify their children’s starting points alongside practitioners. • Parents are encouraged to discuss their child’s development on a regular basis, take part in stay and play sessions where opportunities to watch their child play and discuss any concerns are offered. • Assessments are shared with parents identifying any areas of concern.How do you support a child’s learning and development?
• We will put into place a development plan for your child, assessing their needs and requirements alongside you to ensure they receive the best possible care and education to support their development. • We are always available for any questions you may have regarding your child’s learning and development, referring to other professionals where necessary to ensure their needs are fully met.How do you meet a child’s educational needs?
• Through working with you and other professionals following guidance provided. • Have regular meeting with you and all professionals involved to ensure your child is receiving continuity of care and education to support their development.How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?
• Through regular observations within nursery to assess your child’s progress in all areas of learning. • Regular feed back on home/setting learning and progress. • Regular updates on development plans.How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?
• Through assessing the needs of your child and how they can be met within the setting for example; working in smaller groups, adapting the layout of the room, minimising resources so not over stimulate, addressing your child’s interest to incorporate learning or purchase specific resources that will benefit your child.How accessible is your service, outside and inside?
• We have a large carpark with disabled bays for easy access, along with automatic double doors on ground level. • Our corridors are wide with wide doors and spacious rooms with areas set out for easy manoeuvring. • Our outdoor area is set out according to children’s individual needs and requirements as well as their interest. • Various activities are set up to ensure all children are accessing all areas of the curriculum over each week.How do you involve children in outings and trips?
• Trips are carefully planned to suit the needs of all children. This may include providing your child with a one-to-one support to enable an equal opportunity to both access trips and to achieve their best possible outcomes when doing so. • Trips will be discussed to ensure all staff have full understanding of what your child’s needs are and how they are to be met.How do you work with other organisations?
• Once contacted with your permission we work with other agencies to maximise your child’s chances of achieving to the best of their ability. • This will involve regular meeting with you to discuss the best course of action to support your child. • Professionals will put forward their advice and you and our setting will discuss any concerns or adjustments required to suit your child’s individual requirements.How do you support children when they start and leave?
• Your child will be allocated a key worker to support their emotional needs when starting with us. They will be responsible for assessing their development and recording all observations and assessments to evidence their progress or highlight any areas of concerns. • Your child will initially start with settling visits: the first visit you will be expected to stay with them while they familiarise themselves with the environment. The second you can leave them for up to one hour with their key worker while they adjust to you not being there. The third you can leave them for up to 2 hours. After the third visit a discussion will take place to decide if any further visits are required before your child starts their contracted hours. • You are welcome to contact as often as you like when your child starts with us to reassure yourself, they are safe and happy. • When leaving to go onto a new setting or school a transition period will take place to ensure your child’s emotional wellbeing is fully supported. This will involve visits to their new setting and sharing all information to assist your child’s new worker with meeting their needs.How are you/staff trained in extra needs?
• Our SEND officer Wendy Butterworth has a BA Hon’s in Early Years with many years’ experience of looking after children with SEND and has accessed many courses relating to various areas of SEND including autism training, ADHD and sensory disorders. This experience is used to support staff in their roles to ensure they feel comfortable when delivering learning opportunities to children. • Staff are encouraged to access training as part of their professional development.What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?
• You can make a complaint to Gemma Gray the setting’s deputy who will be happy to log your views. You will then be informed as to what will happen next according to the settings policies and procedures of which you are welcome to have a copy. • Once your information has been processed and any outcomes have been concluded you will be informed in writing. If at this stage you wish to appeal the outcome you may appeal this in writing to Wendy Butterworth the nursery manager who will address the concern accordingly. • If you are still not happy with any outcomes of your concern/complaint you can make a formal complaint to OFSTED on 0300 123 4666
