How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

Observation and record-keeping enable us to monitor children's needs and progress on an individual basis. Children’s development is monitored through, close observations, and assessment of all children. This assessment process starts before the child starts the nursery as parents will complete an All About Me child’s profile A combination of both the parent’s account and key persons baseline will form an overall assessment of the child. Assessments will then continue on a termly basis. Observations of the child will feed into each termly assessment. Children are tracked each term and summative assessments are completed and shared with parents. The key worker will then review the next steps and if progress is still not being made over some time, then the nursery Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) will provide support. We strive to ensure we have good communication with parents and regular discussions help us conclude whether children are behind their expected age bands or have other interests they would like to pursue. We recognise that factors outside of the setting can play a role in the child’s development and behaviour. Key workers will stay in close contact with parents/carers.

How do you involve parents/carers?

The child’s progress and achievements are shared with parents daily. We aim to provide additional resources and additional support for children with SEN(D) where possible. Parents are always encouraged to complete observations of their child. From when the child starts the nursery, parents will complete the baseline assessment booklet which will help staff identify the stages of development that the child is at. Parents are encouraged to carry out next steps in the home and share this information with us. Home observation sheets are given out to parents. This encourages parents to become involved in the process and support the child at home with consistent targets and strategies.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We carry out home visits for each child before they start at the nursery which the Manager and the child’s key person will attend. We understand that a child’s first educator is their parents, We will complete the All About Me page with the parents in their homes. Once a child has started at The Forest Tree Nursery, we will monitor their development through observations and assessments. This will lead to a parent’s evening where we will raise any concerns if we feel it’s necessary. However, if a parent has raised concerns about their child before they start, we will work closely with them to assess their child’s development and discuss making referrals when needed. If a child starts with identified needs, we will work with the professionals involved to arrange a meeting.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

Through tracking of information gathered from observations, Keyworker/ SENCO can identify where more support and help may be required and subsequently put this in place. We provide good role models for positive behaviour and are consistent in the day-to-day care of all our children. Personal health care plans can be adopted if necessary and staff will be trained in giving the appropriate medication for the child if required.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Each child has an individual file that the SENCO regularly reviews as well as any support plans or reviews they have had. Plans are reviewed every six weeks by the SENCO, parents, and other relevant agencies unless earlier intervention is needed.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

We have a separate intervention room that other agencies can access. Activities will be adapted to ensure your child can interact fully will the environment and visual strategies linked to Elklan are to help them understand our routines.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

All areas are carefully selected to ensure the safety, well-being, and inclusion of all our children. Facilities and transport are carefully selected to ensure that all children can participate. All staff are first aid trained. The child/staff ratio is met on outings and in our outdoor provision. The Forest Tree Nursery is on the ground floor. All rooms have access to the. The baby room has its own enclosed garden area.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

We ensure that the visit has been checked by a member of staff beforehand. ensuring accessibility for all children. We ensure the travel arrangements accommodate the needs of the children. Parents are invited to attend the trips.

How do you work with other organisations?

Parents are advised to speak to any health visitors or GP in all instances. Once contacted with your permission we work with other agencies to maximise your child’s chances of achieving to the best of their ability. We support professionals with visits and share the relevant information needed for them to give appropriate support.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

When a child first starts, Parent/Carer will complete pre-enrolment sessions, It gives the child the opportunity to settle into the environment with the parent and allows staff to see what works best for the child. Parents are asked to complete an ‘All About Me’ form for the child to ensure that staff know all necessary information. If a child is due to leave the setting, where possible the teachers will be invited to any meetings for the child and will usually visit to the nursery to get to know the child and find out any information. A daily diary will be provided to the parents and there will be a conversation every day on drop off and collection with a practitioner celebrating their child’s achievements.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

Senior staff have training in supporting families and children within their homes. Experience is shared and valued throughout the team. We aim to have a dedicated SENCO. All staff receive send training is accessed externally. The team also accesses CPD training online
