How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

On discussion with parents/ carers, and through baseline assessments and robust observations carried out by Keyworkers and other staff. We have a SENCO within the setting who then initiates the graduated approach.

How do you involve parents/carers?

On identification we speak with parents/ carers immediately and make them aware of our concerns. We involve parents/ carers in every step of the assessment process.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

Through Keyworker doing observations and linking them to the EYFS. Parents are invited to speak regularly with Keyworker and SENCO and read all observations and assessments and add any comments as necessary.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

Through tracking of information gathered from observations, Keyworker/ SENCO can identify where more support and help may be required, through regular Person Centered Review (PCR) meetings and creating an Individual plan for the child.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Through regular PCR meetings with parents and sharing information gathered from observation and assessment. Each child has their own Development Profile which is available for parents to view at any time.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

We differentiate planned and focus activities for individual children. We have a 'Sensory room' with specialised resources. We have wheelchair access, and will make reasonable adjustments where we can.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

We are fully accessible as all our rooms are on one level. We have two outdoor accessible areas.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

We will work with parents and assess individual needs. Risk assessments will be completed beforehand and we will make any necessary adaptations etc if required.

How do you work with other organisations?

We encourage external agencies to visit children in the setting and work with these to ensure good lines of communication. We are able to hold meetings and reviews at our setting.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

An 'All About Me' is completed by parents before starting, and a baseline assessment is also completed. Information regarding any other professionals working with families is gathered and shared as necessary. Upon leaving transition documents are completed by Keyworkers to send on and Development Profiles are passed on to parents. Transition meetings are arranged with the next setting to ensure smooth transition for the child.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

On site we have a SENCO who overseas all children's SEN needs, alongside the Nursery Manager. Keyworkers have meetings with the SENCO and attend meetings with outside agencies where appropriate. The Senco has a SENCO level 3 qualification and keeps all nursery staff up to date with training and development.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

Please speak to any member of staff, the Senior Early Years Officer, the Deputy Manager or Nursery Manager. We have an open door policy. If you feel a complaint has not been dealt with appropriately OFSTED are always available to discuss issues.
