How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

We have a Level 3 Early Years SENCO at Forest Friends Pre-school as well as other practitioners who are trained through the Local Authority, this ensures all children receive the right support to meet their needs. We will continue to access training through our Local Authority and any other CPD training available to us. We will collect ‘all about me’ information from parents and each child will be assigned a key worker who will create a baseline assessment when a child starts. Regular discussions with parents, observations and assessments will help us to identify any children needing support.

How do you involve parents/carers?

Parents know their child best and we will strive to form good relationships with parents, working in partnership with them to ensure their child develops to their full potential. Sharing information on what their child has done each day, involving them in the assessment process and encouraging them to share what they have been doing at home. We will discuss any concerns with learning and development, making them aware of the process of involving Health visitors etc and work together to create next steps to help their child progress.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

At Forest Friends Pre-school we pay close attention to the children’s interests as well as where they are at in their learning and development journey. Key workers will observe and assess children, ensuring they are supported through offering a wide range of resources and activities that will support each child’s next steps. We will also monitor how well our curriculum meets the needs of the children and change or enhance when needed.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

We provide a blended curriculum, that follows the EYFS, with regular Forest School sessions that run alongside planned seasonal themes. Planning around the child’s interests and introducing new topics and experiences to help children progress and learn new skills. We will make sure ‘all about me’ records are up to date and have regular discussions with parents/carers about how they feel their child is progressing.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

Key workers will track children’s development through regular observations and assessments, which will be shared with parents/carers. Parents will be able to see their child’s observations and add their own to our online childcare management system. Key workers and management will always be available to discuss their child’s needs.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

Activities and resources are based around the individual child’s needs and interests and will be tailored to their ability, ensuring that they will enjoy the activity and learn through their play. Key workers will identify if a child is not accessing the curriculum, we will then look at the universal provision and make reasonable adaptions to the environment and activities to enable the child to progress in their learning and development.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

Forest Friends Pre-school is fully accessible, all on one level. We have a disabled toilet; the main room leads straight out into the outside play area down a gentle slope. The field, fire circle and forest area are also easily accessible.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

Outings and trips will be based around the children’s interests and seasonal topics. Children will be involved in planning and risk assessing their own trips, through discussions in the setting.

How do you work with other organisations?

We will obtain contact details for the appropriate agencies and open lines of communication with them. With parents’ permission we will share relevant information with them to enable us to support children within our setting. We will also attend our LA’s safeguarding, SENCO and Leaders and Managers Network meetings.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

Settling in sessions will be offered, we will gather ‘all about me’ information and create a baseline assessment, allowing us to plan around the child’s interests. A key worker will be assigned and regular discussions with parents/carers about how they feel their child is settling and what else we could implement to help the child settle in. When a child leaves to attend a new setting or move onto school we will help prepare the child by talking to them about what will happen, look at photos and take a trip to look at the new setting. We will provide the new setting with a transition document, ensuring they are aware of the child’s needs and interests.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

Our manager holds a Level 3 Early Years SENCO qualification, we have a member of staff SENCO trained through the LA and all other members of staff will access CPD training when needed.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

Parents will receive a copy of our complaints policy upon starting. A compliant can be made to management verbally, in writing or through contacting OFSTED. We will deal with and hopefully resolve any complain promptly.
