Changes to Grass Cutting and Grounds Maintenance

We are making important changes to our grass-cutting schedules from April 2024. These adjustments aim to optimise maintenance activities, enhance local biodiversity, and manage resources effectively following recent budget reductions.

Why We're Making These Changes

Due to budget constraints implemented in February 2024 and reduced agency staff, we've carefully revised our grass-cutting schedule.

Our goal is to consistently deliver a quality service throughout the borough while safeguarding staff well-being and supporting environmental sustainability.

What is Changing?

  • Highway Verges: Mowing frequency will change from every two weeks to every three weeks.
  • Larger Highway Verges: Grass will be allowed to grow longer, cut twice per year, with neat mowing strips maintained alongside roads and footpaths for safety and appearance.
  • Parks and High-Use Green Spaces: These will continue to be maintained every two weeks, ensuring they remain tidy and accessible.
  • Non-Council-Owned Sites: Council maintenance will cease at sites not owned by the council.

Expected Benefits

  • Environmental Gains: Reduced mowing will enhance biodiversity, create habitats for wildlife, and lower carbon emissions.
  • Community Aesthetics: Natural green spaces align with our sustainability goals, offering residents an attractive environment.
  • Efficiency and Sustainability: This adjustment reduces fuel use and ensures staff resources are used effectively.

Addressing Potential Concerns

  • Untidy Appearance: To ensure tidiness, we'll maintain clearly visible 1 - 2 meter mowed strips along roads and pathways.

Reporting Fly-Tipping and Litter

If you notice fly-tipping or litter outside the regular maintenance schedule, please report it here.

Requests will be promptly forwarded to our street cleaning team for assistance with litter picking, or fly-tipping removal.

Implementation Timeline

April to October

  • Adjustments: Schedules will be adapted based on growth patterns and community responses.
  • Ongoing Reviews: If successful, the changes will be made permanent, with annual reviews to ensure continued effectiveness.
